At
Bird’s Hollow Beef, our cattle are
born and raised on our own
pastures. Our herd of mother cows
are an English breed of purebred
Whiteface Herefords and our bull is
a purebred Black Angus. The
offspring are called Black Baldies
which do very well growing and
finishing on pasture to produce
quality beef. Our grassfed beef has
a delightfully robust flavor and
provides all of the health benefits
of naturally raised grassfed beef .
Grasssfed beef is higher in total
omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated
linoleum acid (cla), Vitamins A, B,
E, and beta-carotene and lower in
saturated fats.*
A cow
is a ruminant animal and is intended
to eat grass. Our cattle graze on
our pastures from the start of
spring through the early part of
winter. When the grass is no longer
growing, we feed dried hay harvested
from our fields. We raise our
cattle with no grain, no
antibiotics, no added hormones or
implants. In addition, our cattle
have year round access to the
pasture and are never confined. We
take pride in the fact that our cows
are happy cows and humanely raised.
Another
benefit to raising cattle on pasture
is the environmental benefit. We do
not plow or till our land which
controls erosion of the soil,
increases organic matter in the soil
and aides in carbon sequestration.
In addition, the grasslands provide
an environment for wildlife
habitat. Our fields are in a
permanent bed of the finest grass,
legumes and forbs. There are no
herbicides or chemicals applied to
the fields. We let nature take its
course while providing proper
management. All of this provides
for healthier soil and a healthier
planet.

Our calves are born and raised on
our pastures from our own purebred
English herd of Whiteface Hereford
mother cows who are bred to a
purebred Black Angus bull. The
offspring are Black Baldie calves
who grow very well on grass and
thrive with the humane treatment of
being able to roam freely on pasture
while grazing and being by their
mother‘s side. The calves are
harvested for veal at approximately
six months of age and are only
nourished with mother’s milk and
grass. Veal raised in this manner is
classified as pasture-raised by
USDA. It is also referred to as
meadow veal, grass-fed, rose, and
free-raised.
The quality and flavor of the veal
comes from being raised in a
healthy, humane manner by being
raised free range on pasture with
its mother. The veal has a delicate,
enticing flavor with a subtle beef
taste. Our calves never receive
antibiotics, growth hormones,
implants, animal by-products, or
grain and are never confined.
At Bird’s Hollow, we are proud of
the fact of embracing a natural form
of grass based farming. By humanely
treating our animals and allowing
them to graze on open pasture with
their mothers, we are able to
provide superb meat with great
flavor and healthy nutrition. This
approach to farming benefits the
welfare of our animals, our land and
the consumer.
